This mother mammoth is attempting to rescue her child from certain death.

The largest known concentration of prehistoric mammoths dying in one catastrophic event, The Waco Mammoth Site has garnered international attention.  Archaeologists and paleontologists from all over the world have come to explore this spectacular find.
 
Members of the herd ranged in age from approximately three to fifty years.  Indications are that the animals formed a circular defense position, with adults protecting younger members of the herd. Some offspring were found draped across the tusks of the older mammoths in their attempt to save them from impending danger.
Since its discovery in 1978, the story of the Waco mammoths has captured the imagination of many, including Waco artist Janys Frazier. The mother of three sons, she was drawn to the story of devotion these animals had to their children. She has captured a moment in time, with a mother’s effort to rescue her baby from what she instinctively knew was certain death. Janys’ sculpture expresses the fear in the eyes of both animals, and evokes empathetic emotion in the hearts of the viewer.
